Nourishing Communities

Essential Food Baskets

Our Commitment

The Foundation’s commitment to nutrition is reflected in three key initiatives: the annual medical mission, food basket giveaways, and a new program promoting self-sufficiency in partnership with HOPAC.

Nutrition Guidance

In addition to treating patients at the medical missions, volunteers also offer guidance on nutrition and preventive care. A large percentage of patients suffer from effects of high-blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues associated with one’s diet.

Our Mission

The medical mission also provides educational material on nutrition in group settings, helping patients and family members make the connection between their diet and their overall health.

For many families in the region, getting enough in their diet is a challenge.

One of our longest-running efforts began in 1985 through the efforts of TCKF’s Founders’ parents, Carlos and Marina Castañeda, providing food baskets to underserved families in Soyapango—one of the most impoverished regions of El Salvador.

Each reusable large plastic bowl contains essential staples, including a whole chicken, beans, rice, cooking oil, and other items—enough to provide a week’s worth of nutritious meals for a family of four.

For many, these food baskets make it possible to share and enjoy a meal together during the holidays. TCKF also provides toys and treats for the children who come with their parents.

The program Hopac provides food for the center and teaches patients and their families how to grow healthy produce at home, which they can also sell to help support themselves.

During COVID, the food basket program expanded to other towns.

The simple act of providing a week’s worth of basic nutrition for families has been one of the pillars of the foundation over the years and one of the most anticipated events of the year in these communities, both for those who are receiving as well those who are giving.
